About Me

Hello!  My name is Laurie Martin-Gardner, and I thank you for visiting my site.  I hope you will enjoy the poetry, short stories, and other content you will find here.  Although I detest writing about myself, it has been brought to my attention that I need a section on the site for exactly that.  I apologize in advance if I end up sounding like a failed-PR person in the process (lol).

My first priority in life is to my family.  I have five beautiful, rowdy, inquisitive children.  Nothing in life means more to me than those kids.  I would not hesitate to give my last breath to any of them.  They have taught me so much, about myself and about life.  Watching them grow and develop their own individual personalities is the most amazing adventure I've ever been a part of.  My husband DJ is a remarkable man that sacrifices himself so that I can be with our children and pursue my dream of writing.  Our family is very close and is the source of any strength I may have.

I began writing poetry at the age of eight.  By twelve, I had my first poem published.  Much of my childhood was spent with pencil and paper scribbling out rhymes and character profiles.  The writing dwindled in my teen years, but resurged in my early college days.  Then, after I was married, I stopped writing. Life just seemed to be in the way.  The words that had once been so loud in my mind, quieted.  They never completely ceased; I just stopped listening.  It would take a very long time for me to come back to my first love.  But eventually all the other voices that had been demanding my attention began to fade.  In their place, new voices began to speak.  Finally, their words spilled over onto paper.  It may seem absurd to people who do not write, but characters truly do tend to take on their own existence.   Writing the rough draft of Pieces took only a month.  After that, the poetry returned.  My dear friend L. David Scott convinced me to post my work online, and the rest (as they say) is history.

Recently I have ventured into new genres and have begun work as a freelance writer.  Currently I write web content for several clients.  I still have a lot to learn about the freelance world, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the writing I've done so far.

Beyond writing, I enjoy a host of other creative activities.  I homeschool my children and have found it to be one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.  It's also one of the most creatively challenging things I have ever done!  I also enjoy scrapbooking, photography, altered art, and graphic design.

I am a very spiritual person, and I continuously strive to learn and evolve in all that I do.  I study astrology, parapsychology, and many other esoteric subjects.  I read Tarot for myself and those that ask for a reading.  I believe in spirit guides and kindred spirits.  I would love to help others through spiritual counseling or writing.

Although I am typically a quiet and serious person, there is a lighter side to me.  My spiritual landscape has been described as something out of a Skittles commercial.  Truly, I am a hippie at heart!  I love nature and laughter, and while a part of me will always reside in the shadows, I have begun to accept the lighter side of my personality as well.  I love loud rock music, watching the sunrise with friends, fantasy movies, tattoos, piercings, anime, manga, vampires, old cemeteries, history, mythology, sewing, listening to the wind in the trees, reading, meditating, and guys in eyeliner.  The list could go on forever, but I'm sure by now, you get it.

For the first time in my life, I am at peace.  I know who I am and where I want to go from here.  I write what I see and feel.  I create what stirs in my soul.  I am finally me, and nothing more.

I would love to hear from you!  If you have questions, suggestions, or would just like to drop me a note, feel free to email me at

Today's Quote

"A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be." -- Abraham Maslow
